View Full Version : Intermittent shuddering at 60mph - insufficient revs?

Well looks like another problem has veered its head with my Insignia 160 cdti. Whilst joining the motoroway and slowly accelerating to 60mph, I changed into 5th at about 2000 rpm and the car began to shudder as if the revs were too slow for the gear. I released the accelerator and I could steel feel the shudder, the revs were bouncing. I accelerated and it stopped at about 2500 rpm but then came back as i tried changing up. I had to drop to 4th at 60mph to stop it, went on for a minute or so and then stopped.. I managed to get up to 6th with no trouble. This is the 3rd time its happened whilst cruising in a month. I also get the feeling the car isnt feeling as comfortable and smooth as usual, as if the road surface is really bumpy yet I'm sure it isnt as bad as it feels.. I also mentioned in a previous thread about the steering wheel vibrating when braking from speed.... Need to get it to the dealers next week, but worries me as these intermittent problems are difficult to resolve!

sound like a faulty dual mass flywheel to me

Would tend to agree, the DMF is starting to develop issues.

Dealers had it for a day, couldn't find anything wrong though! No error codes, nowt, mentioned the DMF but they said all signs I described were not consistent with the DMF as would feel problems at idle and through the clutch pedal. Also got them to check brakes as noticed steering wheel vibrating on heavy braking, again didnt find anything..... oh well....

The vibration sounds very much like a warped disk if it was the wheel balance youd feel it all the time.

I had warped disks on my old Astra. It would vibrate loads when brakeing at speed.

Theres definately something not right with the accelerator set-up on many Insignia's and it seems to be due to the electronics/ computer.
Ive had my 1.8 in the dealers 3times and nothing could be found.
It was remapped but since it still takes a notion to rev up,usually when in the process of changing gear. It will behave perfectly for a month or two and then suddenly it does it. This lasts just for a few seconds then it settles back to normal.

bet my bottom dollar there will be a ecu update for this, its a software issue and the reason you are being fobbed off is because zee germans have not yet developed a fix for this.. a blocked diesel filter can give similar symtoms, however the likelyhood of this being block on a new car with less than 40k k is minimal

Haven't had the above problem reoccur, but quite often it feels the road is bumpier than it should be... dipping the clutch indicates the engine isnt driving smoothly, yet really hard to identify if this is an issue or not. Same happens on cruise but not on idle, or maybe its just my imagination and increased sensitivity due to muscular aches :0)

I've had this problem twice. Going to get it booked in with the dealer tomorrow.

Since I stopped using tesco diesel and reverted to shell, problem hasnt reoccured (touch wood). I guess until it does happen more often its hard for the dealers to diagnose. My problem didnt give any error codes or issues on the tech 3.

No error codes or other records of events in the diagnostics is what my experience has been on two occasions after engine decided to madly rev up while changing gear.Has done this on about 5 times now. It only lasts for about 5/10 seconds and then is normal again. Can go for months with no problem and then suddenly will have a fit. Never happened on any long drive ( so-far )
Computer was remapped by the dealer but still did not cure the fault
I have the car now18 months but the problem didnt arrive until after the first service. the mileage is just around 11k and i think that sooner or later they will get it back:(

Hi

had my car back in at Vauxhall in Lenzie regarding the shuddering, they said they would check but if found nothing under warrenty i would have to pay £45 for the checkup, when i went back to get the car they said they never found anything but then never charged me, car seems to be running smoother and engine is quieter now so i think they have done something, not had any more shuddering yet so here is hoping.

Afraid the problem has come back again, this time using Asda's diesel. It feels as though the fuel is being interrupted. Sometimes driving along I feel the engine isnt smooth driving the wheels but a tad rough, as though driving on a rough road. Strange thing is that when I stop the idle is fine, no issues and also driving there is no noticeable fluctuation of the rev dial. Its not noticeable until out of the blue it suddenly gets worse as if I am in the wrong gear and the engine is struggling.. I usually have to drop to 3rd and rev to 2500rpm+ to clear it... no error messages, dipping the clutch and it stops with no issues on the idle. Dealers have failed to find anything, anyone got an thoughts what it could be? I'm thinking engine management or even fuel injection?

As I said before and the start of this thread it is most probably the dual mass flywheel.

It happened on me again today whilst driving along at 50mph in 5th. This time I dropped the clutch and checked the rev counter, I noticed the engine speed was bouncing between about 800rpm and 1500 rpm eratically. Again I dropped to 3rd and accelerated to over 3000 rpm and it went but as the revs dropped again towards 2K it began bouncing and the car felt as though I was in too high a gear. Within less than a minute it stopped... Weird! Shortly after though whilst pulling up at traffic lights I noticed a rather odd humming noise from the engine. It sounded noisier than the fan and I restarted the engine, it went. Any ideas anyone?
I'm going to take it to the dealers I bought it and ask them for a second opinion, although it probably wont do it now for a while.

Definately dual mass Flywheel!! :o
