It tells you about this in the manual. Scary! Especially if they looked at the speedo readings of my hire car:D

It doesnt say any of this at all. Read it again.

Its used in a crash or near a crash event. Just like a black box is in a aeroplane.

Like most things.
Dont mess and you have nowt to worry about.
Its there for a reason, if you want to mess and faff about with your car then its your own fault, just as it always has been.
If you get caught out then tough luck, you got caught out playing games that you know little about.
Read things not presume its much easier:)

Makes you wonder how much more complicated cars are going to get! A black box is a good idea in some ways I suppose, may stop some dodgy insurance claims!

Ah ! but, what about all the jiggery pokery thats done at the dealers with people who dont really have a clue. They do software upgrades when they dont know what caused the problem. So, what would the black-box make of that?

I Did'nt know about the black-box but I have read a lot of the stuff in the manual and I think some of the dealers would need to take time out and read it all. I remember reading about the foldable tow hook and on asking if they could fit one I was told they had never heard of it.
So where is this black-box situated ? ( as a matter of interest ):(

Most cars have them fitted now. There is nothing sinister about them.
As far as I know the information is extracted from an air bag unit underneath the front seat.
A factory dealership GM Tech 2 scan tool cannot recover the air bag crash data.

It is there for a purpose.
